‘Special corona fee’ levied to deter gatherings after police called in to break up crowds

India imposes 70% alcohol tax as Covid-19 lockdown relaxed

Indian taxation on alcohol in retail shops is levied by the lockdown 19 of the COVID lockdown of relaxed officials in the Indian capital, who have levied a special fee of 70% on retail sales in order to discourage large gatherings in shops.

Alcohol taxes are a significant contributor to the revenues of many of India's 36 states and federal territories, which, due to the long disturbances in economic activity due to the epidemic, are largely underfunded.

Police fined hundreds who had flocked to drink shops when they opened the world's largest lock-down on Monday, which is due to continue until 17 May, for the first time.

In a public notice on Monday, the Delhi State Government announced the "special corona fee."

"It was a shame that some shops in Delhi were seeing chaos," said Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of the state. "Once we learn we have to seal the area and there withdraw the relaxation if we learn about breaches of social distancing and of other norms from some area," he added.

Additional countries, such as southern Andhra Pradesh, where citizens have violated measures of social distance to queue for alcohol in their hundreds, have raised rates.
The increase is attributed to India's 3,900 new Tuesday infections, which amounted to 46,432, with its highest one day rise. There were 1,568 deaths, says the Ministry of Health.

Health experts said the regular growth showed India remained at risk following its extreme lockdown of $1.3 billion since the end of March and all public transportation stopped and economic activity almost frozen.

"A downward trend has not revealed the curve. Dr. Randeep Guléria, the director of the first All-India Institute of Medical Science in New Delhi, said this is the cause of concern.

The average daily increase in cases was 6.1, behind Russia and Brazil in the last week, but above Britain, the United States, and Italy.

In Maharashtra, India's commercial capital, Mumbai, Gujarat as well as in Delhi, there has been the greatest increase. Such densely populated urban centers, propelled by numerous immigrant jobs, power India's economy.

The shutdown helped to avoid a rise in infections that could have overwhelmed medical facilities, said, government officials. Now every 12 days, up to 3.4 days from the start of the lockout, Lav Agarwal, a joint health ministry secretary, has doubled.

The challenge now is to increase the doubles rate, "he said." Lockdown and containment yield results.
